Teacher
roles in total physical response methods
// peran guru pada total physical responnse methods
The teacher plays an active and direct role in Total
Physical Response. "The instructor is the director of a stage play in
which the students are the actors". It is the teacher who decides what to
teach, who models and presents the new materials, and who selects supporting
materials for classroom use. The teacher is encouraged to be well prepared and
well organized so that the lesson flows smoothly and predictably. Asher
recommends detailed lesson plans: “It is wise to write out the exact utterances you will be using
and especially the novel commands because the action is so fast-moving there
is usually not time for you to create spontaneously". Classroom
interaction and turn taking is teacher rather than learner directed. Even when
learners interact with other learners it is usually the teacher who initiates
the interaction.
Academic culture itself has 13 elements which include,
critical, creative, objective, analytical, constructive, dynamic, dialogic,
willing to be criticized, value academic achievement, free from prejudice,
respect time, possess and uphold scientific traditions. All these elements must
be learned and even applied by students.
From the 13
cultural elements above there are some interesting elements to discuss namely
regarding constructive and dialogical. The first is constructive. Constructive
is an attitude where we must have a soul to build for ourselves or others. This
element is very difficult to find today because of various factors. Maybe there
are students who have constructive elements in which they always build in both
the form of speech and action.
Constructive itself can also be taken as an example when
we are in discussion but reaching a deadlock, this is our opportunity to
provide input or constructive ideas. Constructive itself can also be said as
encouragement in the sense that when our friends or relatives are afflicted
with grief we use this element as entertaining or encouraging so that the
constructive element has many effects among people, especially in lectures.
Apart from being
constructive, there is also something called dialogue. Dialogue is an
interaction of two individuals who have a good lead among others. This
dialogical element must also be possessed by students, especially in the social
life of their campus. Therefore the dialogical element is very influential in
campus life.
In applying dialogue in campus life, it can be said to be
easy and difficult because there must be adaptation from each individual
student. When getting acquainted, it is undeniable that each individual will
feel awkward and insecure, but slowly over time the interaction will become
tighter due to reciprocity or feed back.
This reciprocity will cause a positive element so that
the two individuals have a closer relationship. From this relationship shows
that dialogue is needed in lectures because from this dialogical element each
individual will know the name of the world of socialization.
